This is not the original mosque which stood on the site having been rebuilt in 1906, although the design is closely based on the original. Every year, at the end of the rainy season, the mosque is restored with a layer of mud that covers the bricks.  This is very much a communal activity.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nDjenne could be considered the sister trading city to Tombuktou, the latter having been founded by the merchants of Djenne. In the Bwindi National park for instance (est 1991), gorilla tourism and conservation are engaging the local people as guides and wardens. In addition the local community receive a proportion of the park's income. The Mortuary temple was built from the inside out, the outer hall and exterior being completed by Seti I’s son and heir Ramses II after his death.    This temple is a small part of a larger complex at Abydos sacred to Osiris, god of the dead.  <br>\r\n<br>\r\nIn Egyptian legend, (this is the digest version) Osiris was killed by Set, who divided his body into fourteen pieces and scattered them throughout Egypt. Abydos was where the head of Osiris was found.
